This is the website of Xiangyin Gu, an artist based in London. It works like a computer from 1998: the work is kept in folders and programs on a desktop. You don’t need to know Windows to use it. Everything opens with the mouse, a finger or the keyboard.

The quickest ways in:

The icons on the left of the screen are the desktop. Double-click an icon to open it. On a phone or tablet, tap it once.

The grey bar along the bottom is the taskbar. Click Start for a menu of everything on the site: Programs (each project, the House, About, Contact), recently opened Documents, Settings, Find, Help, Run and Shut Down.

Each open window has a button on the taskbar. Click a button to bring its window to the front; click it again to hide (minimise) the window. Rest the pointer on the clock to see the date. The speaker next to it turns sounds on and off.

Start → Find looks for a project, a room, a page or a Help topic by name. Start → Run opens something when you know its name: type hanabi, house or about and press Enter.

To tidy the desktop, drag icons where you like, or right-click it and choose Arrange Icons. Icons you delete go to the Recycle Bin; open it to put them back.

要整理桌面，可以把图标拖到你喜欢的地方，或者右击桌面并选择排列图标。删除的图标会进入回收站；打开回收站就能把它们放回去。

• Click an icon to select it. Double-click to open it.
• Right-click almost anything (the desktop, an icon, a window’s title bar, a photograph, a link) for a menu of what you can do with it. On a touch screen, press and hold instead.
• Drag a window by its title bar to move it, or drag its edges to resize it. Drag icons to arrange the desktop.
• Drag across an empty part of the desktop to select several icons at once.

The pointer changes as it did in 1998: an hourglass while something opens, a hand over links. Pointer trails (faint ghost pointers that follow the mouse) are off to begin with; you can switch them on in Control Panel → Mouse.

Some shortcuts belong to your own computer or browser (for example Alt+Tab or Ctrl+W); those still do what they normally do.

有些快捷键属于你自己的电脑或浏览器（例如 Alt+Tab 或 Ctrl+W）；它们仍然照常工作。

Every page opens in a window. The three buttons at the top right minimise, maximise (fill the screen) and close it. Double-click the title bar to maximise it or put it back. Windows can overlap: click one to bring it to the front.

Folders and the House have Back, Forward and Up buttons, and an Address bar you can type into, for example C:\xiangyin\image or /house. Your browser’s own Back button works too, and the browser’s address always shows the window in front, so you can share it or bookmark it.

If overlapping windows get in the way, choose Always maximize windows in Control Panel → Display: every window then fills the screen, like an ordinary website.

The Projects folder holds every project. Choose a view: Thumbnails, List or Details. In Details, click a column heading to sort. Select a project to read about it on the left of the window; double-click to open it.

In a project, click a photograph to see it in the Image Viewer, where you can zoom in and step through the photographs. All projects on one page shows everything in one long page.

作品文件夹里存放着每一件作品。选择一种查看方式：缩略图、列表或详细资料。在“详细资料”中，单击列标题可以排序。选定一件作品，窗口左边会显示关于它的介绍；双击即可打开它。

The site is also a house, drawn from the plans of the 2008 renovation of the family house. Its front, the south façade, has a door and windows you can click.

Inside, the floorplan works like a map: drag to move, scroll (or pinch) to zoom, and change floors with the buttons R, A, 2 and 1 (roof, attic, first floor, ground floor). Type in Search this house to find a room or a project. Tick Blueprint to see the original drawings.

Click a room to open it beside the plan. Every room has a chapter number, an inventory and a table of constraints. Some rooms have furniture with drawers: click a drawer to open it, then an object inside to read it.

One room has no door. It can’t be entered.

The order of the rooms is set by a rule, after Georges Perec’s Life A User’s Manual: a knight moves across the house’s 5 × 5 structural grid, and the rooms are numbered in the order it first lands in them. Lists of sources, times and hidden things are dealt over the grid by Latin squares, and each room shows which of them it fulfils.

The Rules of the house draw the knight’s path and the order it gives the rooms, floor by floor, with a table of what each move opens.

Open Contact to write a message: fill in your name, your email address, a subject and the message, then click Send. You can also follow the work on Instagram. Or open Paint and send a drawing instead: see Drawing something for the artist.

Open Paint (on the desktop, or Start ▸ Programs ▸ Accessories) to draw something for Xiangyin and send it to him.

Drawing. Pick a tool on the left (at the bottom on a phone) and a colour from the colour box, then draw with a mouse, a finger or a pen. The right mouse button paints in the background colour; so does pressing and holding a colour on a touch screen. With a pen, press harder for a wider brush, and turn the pen over to rub out. On a touch screen, pinch with two fingers to zoom and drag with two fingers to move around. Undo takes back what you did, step by step.

Sending. Click Send to Xiangyin in the toolbar (or File ▸ Send). Add your name, a note and your email address if you like. All three are optional; leave an email address if you’d like a reply. Then click Send.

Where it goes. The picture (a PNG file), and whatever you filled in, go by email to Xiangyin’s inbox, through this website’s server. Nothing else is sent. It isn’t posted on the website or shown to anyone else, and the website keeps no copy. An anti-spam check by Cloudflare runs first.

Keeping it. While you draw, the picture is kept in this browser only, so closing Paint doesn’t lose it; File ▸ New starts again. File ▸ Save keeps a copy on your device. File ▸ Open, pasting, or dropping a picture on the window lets you draw on a picture you made somewhere else.

它去哪里。这幅画（PNG 文件）和你填写的内容，会通过这个网站的服务器，以电子邮件送到 Xiangyin 的邮箱。不会发送别的内容。它不会发布在网站上，也不会给别人看，网站也不保留副本。发送前会先进行 Cloudflare 的反垃圾验证。

保存。作画时，这幅画只保存在这个浏览器里，所以关闭“画图”也不会丢失；“文件 ▸ 新建”可以重新开始。“文件 ▸ 保存”可以在你的设备上保留一份。用“文件 ▸ 打开”、粘贴，或者把图片拖到窗口上，就可以在别处画好的图片上接着画。

Open Start → Settings → Control Panel.

• Display: wallpaper (including some of the artist’s photographs), screen saver, colour scheme (High Contrast is easier to read), and effects such as dragging whole windows.
• Mouse: pointer trails, double-click speed and larger pointers.
• Sounds: turn sounds on or off and set the volume.
• Folder Options: open icons with a single click instead of a double-click.

Not sure what a setting does? Click the ? at the top right of the dialog box, then click the setting: a yellow note explains it. (Or press F1 while it has the focus.)

What this computer remembers. Your settings; where you put the icons and the windows (each program opens where you left it, at the same size, maximised or not, with the same toolbars); whether to Show this screen each time Xiangyin 98 starts; and a message you haven’t sent yet, until you close the tab. Reload the page and the desktop comes back as it was: the same windows, in the same order, scrolled to the same place. All of it is kept in this browser only.

The first time you visit in a browser session, Xiangyin 98 starts up and asks you to log on. There’s no account: type any name, or none, and press OK (Cancel works too). Click or press any key to skip the start-up screen.

Start → Log Off shows the log-on box again. Start → Shut Down lets you shut the computer down (click to start again), restart it, or put it on stand-by.

在一次浏览器会话中第一次访问时，Xiangyin 98 会启动并请你登录。这里没有帐户：键入任意名称，或者不填，然后按确定（按取消也可以）。单击或按任意键可以跳过启动画面。

I can’t hear anything.

Click the speaker next to the clock and untick Mute. On an iPhone, also check the silent switch.

I don’t like the pointer trails or the animations.

Pointer trails are off unless you switched them on; to switch them off again: Control Panel → Mouse → untick Show pointer trails. If your device is set to reduce motion, there are no trails and windows open without animation.

The windows are too small, or overlap.

Maximise the window (the middle button at the top right), or choose Always maximize windows in Control Panel → Display.

A page looks wrong.

Click Refresh in the window, or reload the page in your browser.

I’d like the browser’s own right-click menu.

Hold Shift while you right-click.

An icon has gone from the desktop.

Open the Recycle Bin, select the icon and click Restore. If the bin was emptied, open Control Panel → Display → Effects and click Restore Default Desktop.

The screen went dark, or photographs filled it.

That’s the screen saver. Move the mouse or press a key. To change or switch it off: Control Panel → Display → Screen Saver.

The colours are hard to read.

Control Panel → Display → Appearance → High Contrast White. Larger pointers are in Control Panel → Mouse.

我听不到任何声音。
